Phytoremediation is a technique for decontaminating environments, whether soil, air, or water, that uses phytoremediating plants as a means of recovery. Phytoremediating plants are those that have the ability to remove and accumulate contaminants from the affected environment through their roots, which are an extremely important part of the process. This technique is characterized by its ecologically sound method of extracting pollution, as it uses plants, and also by the low cost required for investment, and is increasingly being studied and used. Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is one of several plants that has the ability to phytoremediate the soil, and it stands out for its accumulation of heavy metals such as copper and lead. Due to this fact, this work will analyze the effectiveness of sunflower in removing copper sulfate from the soil. After one month of seedling development, quantitative and qualitative analyses were performed on the test plants to evaluate the results obtained. The instrument used for quantifying the contaminant was a spectrophotometer, which proved very satisfactory for this work.
