Eutrophication is based on the increased concentration of nutrients in aquatic ecosystems, such as phosphorus and nitrogen, which in excess cause the degradation of water bodies in an accelerated manner that, in addition to harming public supply and human health , also results in a costly treatment. Thus, alternative methods such as the use of aquatic macrophytes for the treatment of effluents have been addressed in studies aimed at removing pollutants and preserving existing water bodies. Duckweed macrophyte (Lemna minor) have high nutrient absorption and accelerated reproduction, generating biomass. Therefore, the aim of this article is to perform a systematic review on the absorption of phosphate ions from effluents using duckweed aquatic macrophyte, addressing the removal efficiency and final destination of the biomass generated during treatment. The results of absorption obtained in the studies by Affonseca (2016) in stages 1 and 2, Branco (2012), Chen et al. (2018), Lima (2018), Pena (2014) and Selvarani et al. (2015) were 77%, 35%, 54.8%, 90.2%, 86%, 66.1% and 96%, respectively. Regarding management, the biomass resulting from Lemna Minor can be used in the production of organic compost for agriculture, animal feed and biofuels.
