Microplastics, plastic particles smaller than 5 mm, have become relevant contaminants in river ecosystems. Their presence is mainly associated with domestic and industrial effluents, abrasion of polymer materials, and fragmentation of larger debris. These pollutants may be ingested by aquatic organisms, causing toxic effects, bioaccumulation, and the spread of harmful substances. Rivers also act as transport pathways for microplastics to coastal and marine environments. Understanding their sources, dynamics, and impacts is essential for developing mitigation strategies and environmental management policies. Thus, the occurrence of microplastics in the Bugres River was investigated through the collection of 15 liters of surface water. Despite the large amount of visible trash in the riverbed and along its banks, only signs of the presence of microplastics were found, highlighting the need for studies that assess larger volumes of water in this location.
